Yoga
Yoga is an ancient practice that dates back 5,000 years and it involves engaging both your mind and body. Yoga originated in India. There are different schools of yoga, but the most common one practiced in the United States is called Hatha and it emphasizes postures, breathing, and meditation. Many people enjoy yoga because they say that it helps their overall wellness (mood, energy) as well as helps develop a better sense of their body and thoughts. We will be practicing an introduction to yoga together and learning some of the basic breathing techniques and poses that are taught. |
6 Common Styles of Yoga
Hatha Yoga- One pose followed by another. Poses are held longer and you focus on breathing throughout. Get to know where your body should be in each pose. Great for beginners.
Vinyasa Yoga- Poses are done in a fluid, continuous sequence. The instructor has freedom to create sequence in any way.
Ashtanga Yoga- Similar to Vinyasa but it is a set sequence. There are beginner, intermediate, and advanced sequences.
Iyengar Yoga- Similiar to Hatha Yoga but they go into more detail. The instructor makes sure you are properly holing poses and there is use of props- blocks, bolsters, straps.
Hot/Bikram Yoga- Hot and Bikram Yoga are done in heated rooms. 90 mins, 26 set poses, and two breathing exercises are done in a Bikram Yoga session. Hot Yoga is also in a heated room but is less structured than Bikram. More of a flowing style of yoga.
Yin Yoga- Slow, restorative yoga where poses are held for a long period of time (minutes). Poses are focused on flexibility.
